No NIT?

I'm going to try and do a final basketball column for Tuesday's paper, but I thought I'd come share a few thoughts.
I was very surprised Tech did not make the NIT. I thought given their wins, strength of schedule, etc., they'd at least make the field, even as a low seed.
Though Gerald Myers didn't want to get into specifics, I think the reason Tech isn't in the CBI is the $60,000 check they'd have to write before playing a game. I don't think it's a financial reason as much as principle, but that's speculation. I've read in different places most of the night that a lot of teams rejected a chance to play in the CBI.
I'm told the team will have its season-ending meeting next week after spring break.

Tech-OSU post-game thoughts

Another example of when you have a team beat, you don't let them hang around.
Oklahoma State didn't shoot well in the first half and Texas Tech had a chance to seal their fate, but the Red Raiders couldn't put them away.
All in all, I honestly didn't think Tech played poorly. In fact, I said to Pat Knight after the game that usually you get one of two teams to show up -- the good team, which usually wins, or the bad team, which usually gets blown out. I thought the good team showed up today, but they didn't do enough to win.
Even though Charlie Burgess fumbled the ball away late, I thought this was one of his better all-around games this season. Same with Trevor Cook.
Now, it's a waiting game and I know several people in the Tech camp who are uncertain if this team will make the NIT.
I think they will, but I think they'll be on the road in the first round. Stay tuned. We'll have it hopefully shortly after Tech finds out one way or the other on Sunday night.

Live from the Sprint Center

Greetings from the Sprint Center, where I can try and describe the building, but it wouldn't do it justice.
I'd say the Big 12 has a nice rotation set up between Dallas, Oklahoma City and Kansas City. All three venues are solid and appealing to fans and they offer plenty for people to do -- locals and those traveling from out of town.
I just watched the Red Raiders practice and it wasn't any different than most other practices. They went through drills for 40 minutes and seemed pretty loose.
At the conclusion of practice, head coach Pat Knight had a little fun with the players. During a 3-on-2 drill, Knight wanted to team to score on its final possession, but he wanted to make it as difficult as possible. As the offense was trying to score -- and getting offensive rebound after offensive rebound -- Knight summoned for everyone on the baseline to jump in and grab the rebound. The players seemed to get a kick out of the free-for-all.

Jack,

About your question on the earlier thread, I apologize for no post-game thread. It's been hectic getting ready for this tournament.
My thoughts -- and Pat and I discussed this a bit during practice today -- are that it seemed that when Tech got behind against Baylor, the players wanted to win so bad that they tried to hard. Pat even said it was everyone trying to be an individual and not tryying to work as a team. I think that's what led to the quick shots.
